Rhodes Discovery

Symi Island

More details

It was during one of my first visits to Symi that I realised I could understand the meaning of Symi by using my 5 senses. Witnessing the houses of unique beauty with the colours of the rainbow.

Hearing the sound of the church bells proclaiming a different message each time, a happy event, a sad event, a danger. Smell the fresh or dried herbs adorning the bare soil of the island.Taste the traditional dishes with vegetables, herbs, delicacies from the sea.
Touching the sponges, soft, hard, rough in texture, each for a different use.

A visitor coming to Rhodes cannot imagine leaving – surely fascinated by the charm of the island – without having been to Symi. This small island has become world-famous in recent decades. It is sure to be an unforgettable life experience that will remain in your memory. High on the mountain slopes, the small traditional houses dressed in the colours of the rainbow will grab your breath for a few minutes.

We start our day – not too early, let’s not forget we are on holiday – by boarding the company bus that will take us to the port. The journey takes about 1.45 hours. First we make a short stop in the area where the monastery of Archangel Michael is located, south of the island, protector and patron saint of Symi.

Our next stop is in the town of Symi. Our guide will give us a detailed account of important moments in the past that marked the culture and life of the inhabitants. We walk through the narrow streets and listen, see, smell and all the senses are active.
We visit the place with the traditional economic factor that helped residents survive in the past, a sponge shop where we learn all about sponges. Some of the information is sure to surprise us! Don’t forget to stop at the spice shop, an essential ingredient for our cuisine,

If we want a bite to eat afterwards, our guide can show us a suitable place or discover on our own what suits us best. When we leave Symi, we will no doubt feel that we spent a wonderful day with unforgettable memories, but leaving something behind, a piece of our soul.
